Description:

Native American, Southwest, New Mexico, Navajo, ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely muslin cloth print representing a Navajo sandpainting motif. The fine example features four thunderbirds surrounding a centrally placed quatrefoil decorated with Navajo symbols for corn, all in hues of russet, powder blue, marigold, tan, deep grey, and white on a beige-dyed fabric. Standing upright with legs and wings spread, each stylized figure presents a rectangular head, a lengthy neck, a minimalistic face, a slender body, a pentagonal tail, and long undulating of hook-like extensions at their feet. White striations extend from the central circle, forming the Navajo symbol for rain or prosperity and separating each of these avian figures. Each of these striations end with phytomorphic finials. Size: 33" W x 39" H (83.8 cm x 99.1 cm)

Also called dry paintings, Navajo sandpainting means "places where the gods come and go" in the Navajo language. They are generally used in ceremonies when the gods are called upon to assist with healthy harvest and healing. The figures depicted in Navajo sandpaintings tell a story of Navajo mythology depicting sacred mountains where the deities, legendary visions, or dances and chants performed during rituals.

Thunderbirds are an important motif in indigenous Southwestern mythology and serve as a sacred symbol to the Navajo, carrying a multitude of meanings. The Navajo believe that thunderbirds not only act as guardians and warn them of approaching danger, but also that they are nourishers that aid in the growth of their crops. In Navajo mythology, thunderbirds guide the souls of the dead through the underworld and comfort them throughout their long journey.
