Description:

Native American, Papago culture, Sonoran Desert, Arizona / New Mexico, 20th century. A very large Papago basket of an attractive bell-shaped form, woven from native plants. The early Tohono O'odham or Papago baskets were primarily utilitarian - used to carry water and firewood, prepare food, and store items. Papago baskets are handmade - skillfully woven with native plants including yucca, bear grass, and Devils Claw. The hues are natural, as Native American weavers appreciated the natural colors of desert plants. This example was skillfully woven and presents an attractive chocolate brown on cream pattern of diagonal fretted bands adorning the walls and neck, with a fine treadlike woven border. Size: 11.75" W x 13.125" H (29.8 cm x 33.3 cm)

Provenance: private Evergreen, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA, collection; acquired 1960 to 2000
