Description:

Native American, Plains Indians, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A stunning and quite large hand-made sheath of rawhide with hundreds of colorful lane-stitched seed beads adorning the surface. The glass beads of turquoise, pink, blue, white, and red, green, and yellow hues are lane-stitched with sinew and arranged in fabulous designs. The front is entirely covered with bead work comprised of horizontal bands on the upper half and vertical beads on the lower part, that outline the shape of the knife blade. The verso has thin diagonal bands and U-shaped patterns of beading with two perforations near the top that are strung with a rawhide cord for suspension. Native American knife sheaths were intricately beaded to display the traditional tribal symbols and sometimes personalized symbols of the owner. Beading was an artform that required skill and patience, and sometimes pieces took months or even years to complete! Size: 11.75" L x 3.25" W (29.8 cm x 8.3 cm)
