Description:

West Africa, Mali, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A pretty graduated necklace composed of large copal resin, pink coral, and turquoise beads as well as brass pendants. The composition features two strands that are strung and connected at even intervals with the heart-shaped pendants to create the graduated design. The large copal beads present in barrel and rounded shapes; these were likely trade beads brought to Mali by European traders. Mali women wore jewelry comprised of similar beads as status symbols and to show off their wealth and dowry. The strands terminate with a modern silver-plated hook clasp. This pretty necklace is wearable as a vibrant and bold accessory! Size necklace: 18" L (45.7 cm); largest bead: 1" Diameter x .5" W (2.5 cm x 1.3 cm)
