Central Asia, India, Mughal inspired, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful 20K+ gold necklace of a graduated design and bejeweled with two teardrop-shaped rubies in the upper register and one round emerald in the diamond-shaped centerpiece. The overall design features wonderful goldwork, filigree, granulated, and enamel details adorning the slender registers and danglers. The 'beaded' chain compliments the granulated passages and border very nicely as well. Size: 16.5" L (41.9 cm) and bejeweled/enameled section measures 6.6" L x 1.75" H (16.8 cm x 4.4 cm). Gold quality: 85-90%, equivalent to 20K+. Total weight: 20.9 grams.

Mughal elites adored precious stones, not just for their beauty, but also for protective and magical properties that they believed each stone possessed. When they conquered India from Central Asia, they brought the technical skills to set gems with them. In order to enforce their high social status, the Mughals passed Sumptuary Laws that decreed only members of the upper class could wear opulent jewelry.
