Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, early to mid 20th century CE. A dreamy hand-carved bowl made from wood of the Monkeypod, a tree native to tropical areas. The bowl presents a slightly concave ring base, engraved with the name of the wood type: "MONKEYPOD," and a rounded body, which tapers inward then gently flares out to the rim. The wood boasts natural graining with swirling hues of toffee and caramel. Monkeypod, also known as Parota, is an exotic hardwood that is coveted for these striking grain patterns. Traditional Hawaiian bowls were carved with tools made of coral and stone, and polished to show off the wood graining. A very pretty example of this traditional form! Size: 9.75" W x 6.875" H (24.8 cm x 17.5 cm)
