Description:

Northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 800 to 700 BCE. An imposing Villanovan cinerary urn, handcrafted from impasto and characterized by its distinctive biconical shape and single handle. Produced and deposited in northern Italy during the 9th and 8th centuries BCE, vessels like this example were used to hold cremated human remains often accompanied by personal ornaments such as brooches, pins, beads, or bracelets. A bronze or ceramic bowl, or sometimes a helmet, served as a lid for the urn, which was then placed in a cylindrical shaft tomb or a rectangular stone-lined cist. Here, the massive jar is adorned with incised geometric motifs as well as petite, punched dots and a twisted handle. Size: 11" L x 9.7" W x 11" H (27.9 cm x 24.6 cm x 27.9 cm)

The base of the burial chamber was typically lined with ashes from the funeral pyre, and small cups or bowls, usually two or three, were arranged around the urn. The tomb was sealed with a small pile of stones. Villanovan cemeteries were densely packed with graves, spaced approximately one meter apart.
