Description:

Ancient Europe, northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 8th to 7th century BCE. A petite kyathos formed from impasto ware (also called Buccheroid impasto) with a narrow base and a single handle rising from the verso. Squat walls constitute the shallow, circular form of the basin, and the handle features a bifurcated finial on top. Impasto is a rough, heavy, and unrefined brown clay used heavily by the Villanovans and was the precursor to the more-recognizable Etruscan bucchero pottery. Size: 3" L x 2.625" W x 2.9" H (7.6 cm x 6.7 cm x 7.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-property from the George R. Francoeur Trust, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, sold to benefit the George R. Francoeur Scholarship Fund at Cranbrook Academy of Art, acquired in 1992 from Charles Ede, Ltd., London
