Description:

Pre-Etruscan, Northern Italy, Villanovan culture, ca. 1100 to 700 BCE. This is a blackware jar (impasto, a precursor to the Etruscan bucchero) with a scalloped design on the body and twin symmetrical handles rising from the shoulder. The Villanovan culture is known mostly for their cremation burials, which were placed into hand-modeled impasto urns. Impasto is a rough, heavy, and unrefined brown clay. Size: 7.3" W x 5.75" H (18.5 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Julie & Ugo Rempte collection, Upstate New York, acquired before 1980.
