Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A beautiful ring of a wearable form composed of 93% silver wires that create a coiled presentation. The ring features thick, twisted bands with dozens of incised spheres resting within the deep grooves, and the fused terminals taper to create thin strips that wrap around the opposite end. Viking men and women wore silver accessories like this example as signs of visual wealth. They were often used as currency or deposited in rivers as offerings to the gods, though they were also buried with their owners upon death. Size: 1.1" W x 1.125" H (2.8 cm x 2.9 cm); quality of silver: 93%; total weight: 8.5 grams; US ring size 8.5

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
