Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A beautiful and wearable ring formed from twisted wires of 95% silver. The middle of the shank features thick wires coiled around one another that gradually fuse and taper down to form the narrow terminals strips that spiral around the opposite arm. Viking men and women wore silver accessories like this example as signs of visual wealth. They were often used as currency or deposited in rivers as offerings to the gods, though they were also buried with their owners upon death. Size: 1.1" W x 1.125" H (2.8 cm x 2.9 cm); quality of silver: 95%; total weight: 8.1 grams; US ring size 9.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
