Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A beautiful pendant of an ovoid form, comprised of high-grade (89%) silver, depicting a pair of enormous serpentine creatures that are perhaps representative of Jormungandr, the World Serpent. The bodies of each beast are coiled around and facing away from each other, their large heads dotted with circular eyes and narrow snouts with projecting tongues, all within a thin peripheral border. The horizontal suspension cylinder is etched with dense linear motifs, and the entire pendant hangs from a modern necklace strand. Size (pendant): 1.5" W x 1.625" H (3.8 cm x 4.1 cm); (necklace strand): 22.5" L (57.2 cm); quality of silver: 89%; total weight: 9.9 grams.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
