Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. later 10th to early 12th century CE. A beautiful cast silver pendant that is most likely in the Ringerike style, depicting a fantastical animal - probably a deer. The pendant is round and shows openwork, with the main field containing a relief image of the creature with a wriggling ribbon-like body, the head turned to the left to face the tail, the mouth opened, and the image enclosed in a rimmed curb. The Ringerike style evolved from the earlier Mammen style, both typologies of Scandinavian animal art. The tendrils that form the animal's body are joined by tendrils independent of the body (as seen in the upper part of this pendant). The Ringerike style is characterized by the presence of these sinuous tendrils in addition to an animal motif. Are these snakes? Vines? The Ringerike style was particularly popular in England and Ireland, and many of our known examples come from there. Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" W (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm); 6.5 grams
