Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. Comprised of 93% silver, a beautiful Viking cross pendant suspended via its integral loop from a silver wire ring. The cross stands out for its amazing filigree work, creating the appearance of a delicate silver rope wrapped around the arms. Its central circular face is further adorned by a large silver granule and is also wrapped with a twisted, rope-like border. The loop is cleverly incised with diagonal markings to create the illusion of a rope, and it is further adorned by a coiled silver wire. A stunning reminder of the devotion and piety of people during this time period. Exquisite and ready to be strung on your favorite chain! Size: 2.125" L (5.4 cm); cross itself measures 1.625" L x 1.625" W (4.1 cm x 4.1 cm). Weight: 13.2 grams. Silver quality: 93%.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
