Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A lovely 94% silver Thor's Hammer, a pendant hammered into the form of a simple hammer with a gently pointed, D-shaped head. The head has been cast as one part with a long handle that ends in a drilled perforation for suspension. The surface of the hammer has been stamped regularly with one of the most ubiquitous metal decorations of the Viking period, a triangle, with a sun-like motif at its center. These motifs were made by applying a punch onto the object's surface shortly after it was cast. The hammer hangs on a 97% silver chain with stamped motifs on its squared-off loops and with a trio of ring-shaped enclosures from which hang the Thor's hammer. Size of hammer: 1" W x 1.7" H (2.5 cm x 4.3 cm); chain is: 30" L (76.2 cm); total weight: 115.1 grams

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
