Description:

Northern Europe, probably made in Scandinavia but found near York, England, ca 9th to 10th century CE. Fascinating, rare and very desirable solid silver belt buckle. Comprised of thin sheet silver that would have been attached to the end of a leather strap, along with the buckle and insertion tang. Inset into the end of the tang is a yellow translucent stone that could be in the safire family, or other unidentified stone. It has been crudely faceted and is more cabochon than faceted. Size: 2-1/4"L x 1-7/8"W; 24.8 grams. Provenance: Ex-private York, England collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109371

  • Condition: Losses on underside of strap covering, else quite excellent
