Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A fine forged-iron ensemble consisting of a horse shoe and a horse bit. The horse shoe is of a classic semicircular form with thick terminals and six pierced holes for attachment nails. The bit features connected lateral bars in the center, a pair of tight spirals flanking a flared strap tab, and a thin ring suspended within the exterior bit loops. Fine layers of patina have formed across the bit and shoe. Size of largest (horse bit): 9" L x 3.625" W (22.9 cm x 9.2 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Ventura County, California, USA collection, acquired in the 1980s to 1990s
