Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 12th century CE. A cast-bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and expanded circular terminals. Each recessed cavity - on the arms, terminals, and center of both the obverse and reverse sides - displays remnants of the original yellow enameled adornments; the five circular areas are representative of the five wounds Christ suffered during the Crucifixion. This style is often referred to as a “Viking cross,” because they are often found in ancient Viking village sites and burial mounds due to the indigenous peoples’ gradual conversion to Christianity. The bronze surfaces have developed a stunning blue-green patina with some lustrous areas of brown patina as well. Size: 1.15" W x 1.45" H (2.9 cm x 3.7 cm).
