Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking to Medieval culture, ca. 8th to 13th century CE. A collection of 4 iron tools or implements from a Viking settlement, likely blacksmithing tools. Blacksmiths forged not only the tools for everyday life- such as farming equipment- but also weapons. Blacksmiths were integral and well respected members of society and often buried with their tools. The object with the butterfly wing panel and pin may have been some type of attachment, perhaps on a chest. Size of largest: 8.5" L x 1" W (21.6 cm x 2.5 cm)
