Description:

Northern Europe, Viking, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A fine example of a Viking iron spear blade with a long conical socket - indeed, on this example, the socket is nearly as long as the blade itself! The socket is bisected near its base by a rivet hole. A handle would have been attached here via an inserted nail. Spears were used both for close combat and as throwing weapons. In Norse mythology, at the very first battle in the world, Odin threw a spear over the heads of his enemies in order to begin the fight. Size: 1.15" W x 15.1" H (2.9 cm x 38.4 cm); 15.9" H (40.4 cm) on included custom stand.

#148055

  • Condition: Repaired where the socket meets the blade. Really nice preservation of form, with some small losses from the edges of the blade and socket commensurate with age and material. It is rare to find iron weapons from the wet climate of the northern Viking world in such good condition.
