Northern Europe, Viking/Norse culture, ca. 1000 CE. A repousse silver-gilt applique depicting a facing figure of Odin, modeled sitting cross-legged holding a serpent and a cross; the serpent curving from the figure's lap to bite the shoulder, grasped in the right hand; the left hand resting in the lap grasping the shaft of an expanding-arm cross. The serpent is positioned in such a way that it seems to suggest a large phallus. Odin has band of beads down to the throat; the head is bald with braids beneath the ears and a trimmed beard. Size: 1.05" W x 2" H (2.7 cm x 5.1 cm); 91% silver, 8.9 grams

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private Kaliningrad (Koenigsberg) and then Latvia collection; found on the Baltic Sea coast prior to 1982
