Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse, ca. end of 9th to mid 10th century CE. A cast silver openwork pendant with its decorated side covered in bright gilding. The face of the pendant depicts two highly stylized, Janus-headed, horse-like beings. Their bodies are joined together by various gripping paws, which are one of the hallmarks of the Borre Style, a widespread form of Viking art, with examples found from Iceland to Russia, and production likely centered at the great Viking trading center of Birka. This example has a loop at its top for suspension with two small projections that resemble ears to either side of it. This item is from the height of the Vikings' expansionary period, and probably reflects the rich stylistic milieu of their contacts with other cultures like the Anglo-Saxons. Size: .875" W x 1.5" H (2.2 cm x 3.8 cm); Weight: 8.3 grams
