Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A fine example of a penannular brooch, cast from bronze, with a pin wrapped around the ovoid form and two raised, square terminals. The body of the brooch was cast with a light, striped texture. This style of brooch was originally created in the Celtic British Isles ca. 600 CE and became popular throughout Scandinavia after the Vikings began to have contact with Celtic peoples following their forays along the coasts at the end of the 8th century CE. Size: 2" W x 1.75" H (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm)

  • Condition: Patina over surface. Nice form with very slight bending. Pin is still present and movable, with very slight loss to the bronze where it wraps around the body of the brooch.
