Description:

Northern Europe, Viking / Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A collection of bronze and leather fragments from straps used as part of a Viking horse's tack. The bronze is decorative, with added studs along its length; the leather straps are of similar design, with bronze studs also along their lengths. The Vikings treasured their horses and would have outfitted them well, as these straps show! They are all displayed nicely together in a shadow box. Size of largest fragment: 9.5" W (24.1 cm); size of shadows: 12" W x 8" H (30.5 cm x 20.3 cm)
