Northern Europe, Vikings or Viking Rus, ca. 9th century to 11th century CE. A collection of ten bronze bell-shaped beads and two pretty pale blue glass beads, all from the Viking era. These are strung on a modern sterling silver chain to create a wearable, elegant necklace centered around ancient elements. Finely decorated clothing was a sign of wealth in the Viking period, and buttons like these were used to fasten them tightly to protect against the cold; wet weather that was typical in the North Atlantic and Scandinavia. Size of largest button: 0.4" W x 0.55" H (1 cm x 1.4 cm); chain is: 18.5" L (47 cm); 26.6 grams total weight
