Northern Europe, Viking Culture, ca. 8th - 11th century CE. A carved bone example of Thor's Hammer, with suspension loop at top, incised cross design across center, and Runic inscription on rear. Deep brown patina from age. Thor was the Norse god of thunder, lightening, storms, and strength, also charged with the protection of mankind. He is almost always described or depicted with a hammer. this finely carved pendant was likely worn to give the wearer protect in life and death. 1-6/8"H x 1-3/8"W.

Provenance: Ex-Private United Kingdom Collection, acquired in the 1970s.
