Description:

Northern Europe, probably Eastern area, Viking, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A breathtakingly beautiful 18 karat gold pendant of lunate form with a symmetrical composition featuring a decorative surface with dense granular motifs that look like an open mouth full of sharp teeth. Diamond-shaped clusters of granules stud the interior at regular intervals. A long, horizontal, tubular loop is attached to the top for suspension. Granulated gold items were the ultimate symbol of wealth and status in Europe at this time, and Viking examples often come from the eastern areas that they colonized and traded with, modern day western Russia and eastern Europe. They were likely inspired by the fine jewelry of the Byzantine world. Weight: 8.8 grams Size: 1.375" L x 1.25" W (3.5 cm x 3.2 cm); 2.5 grams
