Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Vietnam, ca. mid to late 15th century CE. A beige pottery vessel that features a round and slightly-flared base, rough and broad shoulders with three diminutive handles, a narrow neck, a small mouth, and a wide flaring lip. Clouded pearl-colored deposits dot the outer surface and the original glaze, while present and visible, has faded substantially. A small but desirable piece of sunken history! Size: 2.25" W x 2.25" H (5.7 cm x 5.7 cm).

This piece is from the Hi An shipwreck, which was found off the coast of central Vietnam in the South China Sea in the 1990s and excavated in 1999. When the ship went down, it was carrying a massive cargo of Vietnamese ceramics -- over 250,000 unique pieces! These were all kilned in the Red River Delta. I particularly enjoy these shipwrecked items because of their delightful encrustations and how well the artwork is preserved.
