Description:

Southeast Asia, modern day Vietnam, Annamese (sometimes Anamese), ca. 15th century CE. A large shallow bowl, finely decorated with a painting of a fish on the tondo with a surrounding border of foliage motifs as well as calligraphic motifs around the exterior walls - all in deep blue on a creamy white ground. This example comes from the Hoi An shipwreck, discovered by fishermen off the coast of central Vietnam in the South China Sea in the 1990s. In order to pay for the extraordinarily expensive excavation of the ship, the Vietnamese government had 90% of the over 250,000 intact pieces of pottery recovered sold at auction. Size: 9.25" in diameter x 2.125" H (23.5 cm x 5.4 cm)
