Description:

Southeast Asia, modern day Vietnam, Annamese (sometimes Anamese), ca. 15th century CE. A graceful porcelain dish with shallow sides, a slightly thickened rim, and a low, wide disc foot. The interior and exterior are glazed with sparing, delicate floral and vine-like motifs in deep, cobalt blue against a creamy white background. This dish comes from the Hoi An shipwreck, discovered by fishermen off the coast of central Vietnam in the South China Sea in the 1990s. In order to pay for the extraordinarily expensive excavation of the ship, the Vietnamese government had 90% of the over 250,000 intact pieces of pottery recovered sold at auction. Size: 9.1" W x 2.35" H (23.1 cm x 6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-SAGA Project
