Description:

Asia, Vietnam, Dong Son, ca. 1st millennium 206 BCE. An interesting form of stupa made of leaded-bronze from this early Vietnamese culture. Once cast as three separate pieces and later joined the set is comprised of a bronze discoid form with a frontal recess bearing a perforated suspension hole. The next is a cast bronze finial with a piriform body, short neck with fluted lines, and a carinated rim. A cylindrical opening extends through the center of the piece. Under the rich patina are faint traces of the raised foliate motif. The last piece is a cast bronze base with a flared rim and domed body. A hole at the top indicates where a handle was surmounted. Size finial: 1.5" W x 3" H (3.8 cm x 7.6 cm); disc: 4.8" L x .4" W (12.2 cm x 1 cm); bell: 3.5" W x 3.5" H (8.9 cm x 8.9 cm)
