Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A charming figural vessel in the form of a seated anthropomorphic figure. One skinny arm is in relief on the body; the other extends outward from the body, resting on the knee. The legs project outward, just barely touching the ground as the vessel sits, giving the figure a whimsical appearance. A large head rises from the apple-shaped body of the vessel, dominated by a long, thin nose, with two bean-like eyes and a wide, thin mouth. Huge ears with open rings - perhaps made to once have gold rings or feathers through them - could also serve as handles. A more traditional handle with an acute angle is attached to the top of the vessel and the back of the head. A short, cylindrical spout rises from the center of the handle. Black-on-red motifs create the impression of tattooing or scarification on the body. Size: 6.75" L x 3.75" W x 7.35" H (17.1 cm x 9.5 cm x 18.7 cm)
