Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Vicus culture, 200 BCE to 600 CE. A pretty, hand-sculpted jar with a thin, cylindrical handle and cylindrical spout topping a bulbous body with corseted shoulders. The head of a bird with a large, long beak and a speckled head forms the other end of the handle. The body has been slipped with an earthy red-brown color and painted with black line decorations. Black stripes wrap around the spout and handle, and the upper body of the vessel also once had black wavy motifs that are still visible in some places. Vicus ceramics were influenced by the Gallizano and Salinar cultures, which were in Ecuador, immediately north of the Vicus homeland. Animal figures are particularly popular in Vicus ceramics, and probably indicate a keen cultural awareness of the natural world. Size: 5.6" W x 6.05" H (14.2 cm x 15.4 cm)
