Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A wonderful pottery vessel comprised of 2 chambers that are connected via a lower tube and an upper strap that doubles as a handle, all enveloped in a lustrous red glaze. The larger chamber boasts the form of a nude male displaying a plump body supported by nubbin legs that flank a prominent, projecting phallus. With both attenuated arms bent at the elbows, he places his left hand on his chest and his right on his belly. His sizeable head faces forward, exhibiting elongated, coffee bean-shaped eyes, a slender, curved nose with delineated nostrils, and a straight incised mouth, all crowned by a headdress with 4 upward spikes. A pair of huge ears with annular drill holes flank his noble countenance, as a series of circular perforations embellish the verso of his head. Alternatively, the other chamber showcases the traditional form of a jug with a bulbous body, a wide, rounded shoulder, and a narrow, tubular spout, all resting upon a planar base. Size: 9.2" L x 4.2" W x 8" H (23.4 cm x 10.7 cm x 20.3 cm)
