Description:

**Originally Listed At $350**

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Vicus, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A hand-built redware llama or other camelid (alpaca, vicuna) effigy vessel, the body elongated and round-bottomed, with two tiny nubs forming front feet. The head and spout of the vessel rise from opposite ends of the body, with a strap-like bridge handle between them. The body has red stripes attained via negative resist. The head of the camelid looks like he is sleeping, or possibly deceased, with a very long snout, perky, round ears, and applied coffee-bean-shaped eyes that are narrowed to slits. The llama was the largest domesticated animal in ancient Peru. In addition to serving as beasts of burden, llamas provided Peruvians with wool and food. They probably also had a religious or ceremonial role as well based on how frequently they appear in iconography. Size: 9.75" L x 3.5" W x 6.95" H (24.8 cm x 8.9 cm x 17.7 cm)
