Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Vicus culture, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel painted in vivid hues of vermilion, black, beige, and cream. The vessel is defined by a round but stable base, a circular body with a protruding midsection and a rounded shoulder, a projecting simian-form head on one end with a tapering cylindrical spout on the other and an arching stirrup-shaped handle arching between the two. Intricate zigzagging, fretted, and curvilinear motifs envelop the entire vessel, and the charming monkey head - which doubles as the tone hole for the whistle - produced a high-pitched sound when air is blown into the spout. Size: 7" W x 7.25" H (17.8 cm x 18.4 cm).
