Description:

Northern Europe, England, Victorian period, ca. mid-19th century CE. A stunning gilt and lacquered papier-mache fan, also called a hand screen or face screen, featuring lustrous, mother-of-pearl inlays and a turned-bone handle. Surrounded by a scalloped edge, the leaf boasts a Gothic-style scene of architectural ruins beside a fountain and lake rendered in rich tones of green, gold, and blue with nacre shell inlay on a black background. Gilt netting and foliate motifs further adorn the edges, while the tuned handle displays floral and vegetal motifs. Hand screens were designed to screen ladies' complexions from the heat of a domestic fire. They would usually be kept in pairs by the mantlepiece in readiness for use. Size of fan: 8.75" W x 16" H (22.2 cm x 40.6 cm); of frame: 15" W x 22" H (38.1 cm x 55.9 cm)

Parts from certain animal species including nacre shell may require an additional license upon import into another country due to legislation relating to endangered species and environmental conservation. If you are not sure whether CITES?rules apply to your item, please see the CITES Appendices.
