Description:

For every order (single or multiple lots) in this auction, Artemis Gallery will donate 25 meals to Community Food Share, a Feeding America Food Bank.

Europe, United Kingdom, Victorian, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of unique 19 karat gold earrings, each with a russet glass intaglio. One intaglio features a youthful, nude male figure, classically styled and shown in profile, perhaps depicting Mercury holding his caduceus and helmet. The other features the face of a bearded man, also shown in profile, perhaps depicting Zeus or an Archaizing Dionysus. Both have small incised letters on them, but they are so small as to be unreadable. The Victorian period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. Size of one: 1.25" W x 1.1" H (3.2 cm x 2.8 cm); total weight: 10.2 grams. Gold quality: 19K.

Provenance: ex- Suzanne Artuner, New Jersey, USA, acquired in 1998; gifted by mother Frances Artuner in 1995 who had owned them in Belgium since the 1960’s
