Description:

Europe, United Kingdom, Victorian period, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of unique 19 karat gold earrings, each with a russet glass intaglio. One intaglio features a youthful, nude male figure, classically styled and shown in profile. The other features the face of a bearded man, also shown in profile. Both have small incised letters on them, but they are so small as to be unreadable. The Victorian period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration, but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. Size of one: 1.25" W x 1.1" H (3.2 cm x 2.8 cm); total weight: 10.2 grams
