Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru and Chile, Chiribaya culture, ca. 1000 to 1360 CE. A fantastic, abstract anthropomorphic jar, brightly and intricately painted. The jar sits on a flat, round foot and has a bulging body that is almost perfectly symmetrical in form aside from a horn-like projection on one upper side. A narrow mouthed, flaring spout rises from the center. All over the body are half-circles, stair patterns, triangles, and eye-like motifs, in earthy red, orange, beige, and black. The Chiribaya culture buried some of their dead in rectangular tombs lined with dozens of beautiful decorated vessels like this one. The people who had these tombs seem to have been the wealthy and powerful in the society, and there is a clear division between their tombs and the simple pits with few goods and plain textiles that characterize some of the other burials. This piece would have marked the grave of an elite person. Size: 8.75" W x 9.25" H (22.2 cm x 23.5 cm)
