Haiti, ca. 1960. Colorful and fascinating voodoo banner. Made of sequins sewn to cloth backing with playing card suites in each corner, a chair to the right, liquor bottle with cross to the left, large golden orb in the center, with the name "Jderosir" above and the words " Loco Atissou" around the orb. Papa Loko is the spirit who teaches the secrets to those called into the vodou priesthood. Papa Loko Atissou, is the Patron Lwa of all houngans. In rituals, he is honored after Legba and Marrasa. Loko was the very first houngan, and legend says he was a human who ascended to the status of Lwa over time. It is Papa Loko who confers the asson, the beaded rattle of priesthood to the Kanzo initiates. Size: 28" W x 33" H (71.1 cm x 83.8 cm)
