Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, ca. 650 to 900 CE. Expertly carved from a piece of jade of pale seafoam green hues, a mesmerizing pendant presenting complex iconography on its angled faces. To the left, a standing lord/cazique in profile, holding undulating, reedlike extensions from his headdress. Emerging from his headdress above is a frontal face donning a plumed headdress, with scalloped edges, as seen on all but the lower end of the piece. To the right is an arm, most likely associated with the front facing visage, and finally below, a serpentine creature which when viewed in concert with the scalloped plumage suggests the presence of Kukulkan, the famed feathered serpent (Quetzalcoatl to the Aztecs). As was the custom, the Mayan artisan worked with the natural shape of the stone rather than lose any precious surface area, in order to create this fabulous multi-headed pendant. Laterally perforated through the eyes of the serpentine creature and the headdress of the frontally facing figure for suspension and/or attachment. Size: 4.625" L x 1.125" W (11.7 cm x 2.9 cm)
