Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A huge, bichrome pottery Jalisco standing warrior figure, gripping a very large and intimidating arrow-pointed spear with both hands (and nicely modeled fingers), boldly presenting it in front of his person. This fierce warrior is dressed for battle, wearing a crested helmet and barrel shaped armor (perhaps a form that inspired the term 'barrel chested'), and addressing the viewer with a no-nonsense, "take no prisoners" attitude. His determined visage is finely delineated with coffee bean-shaped bulging eyes, a long protruding nose, and pursed lips indicating his serious demeanor. Lastly, notice the boots/leg coverings over his gigantic feet; these serve to emphasize the fact that this gent is definitely standing his ground - both literally and figuratively. Size: 8.375" L x 8.25" W x 15.5" H (21.3 cm x 21 cm x 39.4 cm)

This figure stood guard in a shaft tomb, most likely placed so that it was facing outward around the perimeter of the tomb. Some scholars have theorized that this symbolically depicted a continuum between the worlds of the living and the dead. A brawny, militant protector with serious attitude from the ancients of West Mexico.
