Description:

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Nicoya Peninsula, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. Large rounded olla with raised rim painted in shades of red and black over a red/orange base. On each side a high relief figure emerges from the walls of the vessel. On the primary side is a human with raised head showing wide open eyes; bent arms and short legs. On the other side is humanoid face with curled eyebrows, oval eyes and short rounded nose. Body of the vessel is painted with abstract curvilinear and geometric patterns. A nice big example! Size: 11" W x 12" H (27.9 cm x 30.5 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
