Lot 118B
Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A superb Moche III-IV terracotta stirrup vessel depicting an endearing moment shared between a Mochica mother and child, mold-made and painted in red, cream, and black slip. The woman sits with crossed hands resting upon her upraised knees while her child leans in toward, cuddling her right side. The visages of both mother and child are finely delineated with almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, protruding noses, closed mouths presenting subtle smiles, and black face paint or tattoos. While the mother appears to be carrying a load supported by the cream-colored tumpline across her forehead, the child carries a smaller sack of a similar color around his/her neck. A sweet maternal genre scene inspired by everyday life in the Pre-Columbian world. Size: 6.75" L x 5.125" W x 6.875" H (17.1 cm x 13 cm x 17.5 cm)
