Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, ca. 250 BCE to 250 CE. Tweet, tweet, tweet! An endearing polychrome terracotta effigy vessel in the form of a bird perched upon two feet and an outspread tail with a single stirrup spout on its back. Most impressive is its intricately painted "feathered" surface comprised of a rich array of stylized geometric motifs in vivid red, orange, black, and chocolate brown hues. Birds were highly revered by the ancients of the Americas as "sky animals" associated with the sun, the moon, and Venus and were believed to serve as messengers between humans and deities of the celestial realm. A wonderful example replete with strong symbolism as well as magnificent artistry! Size: 5.5" L x 4.25" W x 6.5" H (14 cm x 10.8 cm x 16.5 cm)
