Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A very fine example of a seated West Mexican figure in the Chinesco style (so-called because collectors believed they looked like Chinese-style art). She is sturdy and sits well on her own, giving an impression of solidity. Her facial features are small but expressive, with a creamy yellow glaze having covered some of the holes opened for her eyes and mouth. Her nose is prominent, with a small ring through it. She has her hands on her hips and sits with her wide hips and thighs far apart. Her hair is painted a pale orange. Figures like this one would have been placed into the tombs dug in shafts beneath Jalisco households where family members were periodically interred; archaeologists believe that they were placed around the edges of the tomb facing inward, as if in conversation with the dead.
