Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A skillfully executed and very large bichrome pottery male warrior figure assuming an intimidatingly pose with both of his enormous feet squarely on the ground, knees slightly bent as his body angles forward ready for combat, and wielding his club in both hands. This weapon is elaborately decorated with painted stripes and wavy linear motifs as well as applied round pellets at one end, this level of ornament suggesting the club is a ceremonial implement for ritualistic purposes. He wears a horned helmet, shell earrings, a pectoral incised with 'beads', and protective barrel armor that is decorated with a negative resist striped pattern and incised diagonal marks. All is painted via negative resist in a rich bichrome palette of red and cream hues. The warrior possesses a characteristically long and fleshy-cheeked face with a large pointy nose, incised lozenge shaped eyes, and a half-open mouth of a similar form, all classic traits of the Nayarit style, as are the short arms. Elite individuals of the Nayarit culture were buried in shaft tombs consisting of a large chamber at the bottom of a deep pit. These shaft tombs were typically furnished with precious grave goods including ceramic vessels and sculptures like this statue of warrior, with the intention of protecting the deceased. A fabulous example in wonderful condition, replete with an impressive form, extensive applied and incised details, fine painting technique, and a meaningful purpose. Size: 10.25" W x 18.25" H (26 cm x 46.4 cm)
