Description:

Pre-Columbian, North/Central Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A fabulous hand-built pottery vessel of a tall cylindrical form which rests upon an applied circular base. The lengthy walls gently taper towards the thin rim which boasts a small, vertically-pierced suspension lug on one side and a petite monkey painted in black pigment on the other. Vertical registers of enclosed zigzagging lines as well as a checkerboard motif with enclosed latticework patterns adorn each side of the body in black pigment which has lightened to an eggplant-purple hue with age. Size: 3.75" W x 9.3" H (9.5 cm x 23.6 cm).
