Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Exemplifying the sculptural style of the Colima with its smooth forms and warm red hues, an effigy vessel depicting a seated figure wearing a crested helmet, an incised turtle shell pendant modeled in bold relief, and three bands around his waist, extensively adorned with incised cross-hatched motifs. In addition, his ears are pierced for the suspension of embellishing ornaments. Given this highly decorated state, he may represent a ritual performer, shaman, or ballplayer. His visage, facing left, is quite expressive, presenting almond-shaped eyes, a pronounced nose, and a subtle smile. This piece, with the open spout emerging from the helmet, was most likely used to pour ritualistic libations. A superb example displaying captivating gestures and facial expression, quite distinct from those of the neighboring Jalisco and Nayarit cultures. Size: 6.375" L x 9.25" W x 13.375" H (16.2 cm x 23.5 cm x 34 cm)
